Sport booming at Kents Hill
Tennis remains a prep school sport in many respects. Despite coming to the masses during the boom of the early 1980's, the sport has leveled off in the public sector. Not so at Kents Hill.
The private school has five hard-surface courts, two of them lighted, and they're occupied nearly all the time, according to boys coach Pat McInerney.
McInerney's team went unbeaten in league play last season and despite losing all nine of his players from that team, he's fairly optimistic this season. That's because 52 players went out for the team despite the fact the school's combined enrollment of boys and girls is only around 230.
Among the new players for the Huskies this year are junior Reed Mulbury and freshman Dylan Rich. Both have extensive experience, Mulbury in Charleston, S.C. and Rich who played for his high school team in Japan last year as an eighth grader.
Hockey player Mathieu Provencher is out for the team for the first time and looks solid, McInerney said. Senior Adam Rasgon, a basketball player, also tried out for the first time and made the team. Considering McInerney kept 10 on the varsity and another 12 on the junior varsity team, it's a good bet these kids can play.
Mulbury and Rich will play first and second singles, making McInerney's job a little easier.
"We've got two or three doubles players we're still looking at," he said. "Having a couple of kids up top who can play (helps). We'll get better over the season."
