BASKETBALL: Mt. Abram boys pick up first win

The Mt. Abram boys basketball team earned its first win of the season on Wednesday night, beating winless Lisbon 52-43. Mt. Abram coach Corey Guilford said it was a matter of time before his team's hard work manifested itself as a win.

"We've learned from our losses, which has made us a better team," Guilford said. "We need to execute our game plans and improve. If we do that, we'll sneak out another win."

The Roadrunners had just two players return to the team this season with any varsity experience, juniors Sam Simpson and Noah Tranten. That duo has become the team leaders.

HOCKEY: Saturday night fun at Sukee Arena

In the aftermath of Friday night's brawl at a Lawrence High basketball game, security was tight and visible at Saturday night's hockey game between Lawrence and Messalonskee at Sukee Arena in Winslow.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Dirigo-Winthrop leftovers

Too bad every high school basketball game couldn't be as exciting and competitive as the Dirigo at Winthrop game Friday night. Then again, that's what separates these games from the regular season pack.

Watching basketball games at Gardiner Area High School is generally a pleasant experience. The three-sided seating is unique among area gyms, and the atmosphere can be electric on the right night.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Pullen comes up big

When Cony High School senior center Andrew Pullen missed a shot early in the overtime period of the Rams game against Lewiston High School on Thursday night, part of the Lewiston crowd chanted, "Overrated."
At least one person involved with the Lewiston program doesn't think that word applies to Pullen, after his 23-point performance in the Rams' 73-71 OT win Thursday.

HOCKEY: Lawrence moving up

In the latest Maine Class A Hockey Coaches Association coaches and media poll, Lawrence High School was listed as one of the teams also receiving votes. After Tuesday night, the Bulldogs could move into the top 10.
